Relationships and Setting in Willa Cathers O PioneersO Pioneers(1993) by Willa Cather begins on a blustery winter day, in the town of Hanover, Nebraska, sometime mingled with 1883 and 1890. The narrator introduces four main character the very newborn Emil Bergson his sure-enough(a) sister, Alexandra her friend Carl Linstrum and a little girl, Marie Shabata. Alexandras father, John Bergson, is dying. He tells his two oldest sons, Lou and Oscar, that he is leaving the kick upstairsland, and all of what he has accomplished, to their sister.Alexandra is a hard working young lady and will do anything to make her father proud. When the drought and natural depression struck three years later, Alexandras determination to keep the farm allows her to persevere. some families, including Carl Linstrums, sell their farms and move away.
